A Hopeful Christmas in Berlin

In the month of gifting and sharing, Berlin has always been successful at bringing people together. Warm ‘Glühwein’ and several comfort food options, such as ‘Currywurst’ or a cheesy ‘Handbrot’ (hand bread), are the secret ingredients to enjoy walking around the artisan stands at the different Christmas markets with our loved ones.

Last year, at least seven markets were spread around the different districts of Berlin, including a special, big extra: a Christmas Garden set in the city’s Botanical Garden, a light installation for all ages that was beyond magical.

The cozy feeling of being surrounded by joy, lights, and love; the magic in the air, the smiles on everyone’s faces. Unfortunately though, Berlin can’t offer this setting to happen this year – even though the Christmas markets are fighting to stay, spreading the stands across several streets so we can get to enjoy at least a part of it.

It is our responsibility this year to bring joy and love everywhere we can, being hopeful that one day everything that we cannot enjoy this year will be brought back. Maybe the key is to carry that Christmas spirit inside of us, and spread it around. Here is my way of doing so.

These images were taken in Berlin in November and December of 2019, at the Christmas Garden, around different streets, and at the Christmas markets. My hope is that they teleport you to those feelings of warmth and happiness, and that they inspire you to make the most of this year’s holidays.
